Linda Mercer is a Southern Alberta artist, born and bred. The landscape is her muse. She has come to know and understand the country, as well as her self, through years of drawing and plein air painting. She works to convey the richness of the Southern Alberta landscape with paint, and all it encompasses -from rocks and bales, to hawks and gophers -with clay. Combining these two disciplines creates a synergy, completes a narrative, and forms one body of work.
Linda creates to celebrate the joie de vivre of the raven sited just so on the tip of a lichen encrusted erratic, the ubiquitous hawk perched on the lip of a hay bale, weathered beehives the colors of fading wildflowers, humming in the heat under the prairie sun, or a fence line of gossiping magpies. She works to convey the innocence and light heartedness in this imagery, but also to show the bigger picture, a harder truth. We are all a part of a food chain, and yet within this harsh reality lays a timeless elegance.
Linda is inspired by the sincerity of folk art; she delights in its playful, good-natured expression of life, often in the face of struggle. The intention of her pieces is to celebrate the everyday extraordinariness of this place we call home.
