(Black Diamond celebrates “Light UP” starting at 5 pm on Saturday, December 3, 2011, with many fun street events – so come to town for Small Works and stay for a party!)

This year we asked our artists to reflect on the word “palimpsest” and see what they might be inspired to create. The only limitation we gave is that a 2-dimensional piece must be exactly 12 x 12 inches (finished size), or if the creation is 3-dimensional, it must fit into a 12 x 12 x 12 inch cube.

As usual, our fabulous local artists have been inspired and excited by the challenge, and their new works are beginning to pour into the gallery’s backstock room! We’ve invited some guest artists to join the fun – so we’ll have not only NEW ART, but some NEW ARTISTS in the show as well! We’re very excited to see the beautiful and interesting works coming in. And, the show is “under wraps” until December 2!

We’re thrilled to welcome back Evonne Smulder’s clay art – the art that launched Terra Cotta Gallery! Evonne and Rob have been very busy! All new works, in functional and art clay are now filling a corner of the main gallery. They’ll be in the gallery all day Saturday to visit with friends and anyone who stops in!

Stop in to say hello, add another chili pepper piece to your collection, and check out the fun and fanciful birdhouses that have emerged from the kiln recently!

Cows in Moonlight :: Oil :: 24 x 36 inches

We are very excited to present all new works in oil by Steve Coffey. These paintings continue in the prairie vein – exploring long trains of boxcars, laundry blowing on the lines, and always the big, big prairie skies above familiar harvest and pastoral scenes.

In Steve’s other career as a musician he’s been working on a new CD this past year. The new recording entitled “Bovine World Rail” will be available at this art opening, prior to it being released to the general public at concerts in 2012.

This recording features all new songs & great performances from this band of 10 years: Lance Loree, Dave Bauer, Russ Baker, Ray McAndrew, Steve Coffey and Toby Malloy are The Lokels.

Produced by Russ Baker ‘Bovine World Rail’ delves into the world of organic grooves and poetic meanderings richly grown and harvested from the prairies of rural Alberta.

Join us for a community celebration of the newly published book – compiled by Marika D’Ailly and a collaboration of the Monday Morning Writer’s Group.

There will be readings from the book, book-signing, general festivities, sharing of stories and refreshments! Most of the members of the Monday Morning Writers Group will be present.

All are welcome – families, friends, neighbors, and anybody who is interested in the book, or if you just want to come and start your Christmas shopping on a Thursday evening!

It is a great opportunity to shop, as we’ll be open extended hours from 11:00 to 8:00 pm on this day.

Blanca Botero-Fuentes installation in High River, Alberta

We are pleased and excited to announce another collaboration, this time in High River, Alberta. For the next six-months (October 2011 – April 2012) you can view an installation of works by Blanca Botero-Fuentes in the new offices of the brand new Lorac Executive Business Centre .

All of Blanca’s paintings (fifteen of them) are available for purchase and you are invited to view them in person by visiting the office at 19 – 3 Ave SE, High River, Alberta.

Carol Lyall, of Lorac Executive Business Centre, is expanding her accounting and bookkeeping services to include a full-service office support and furnished offices which can be rented by the month. There are also comfortable large rooms and board rooms to accomodate meetings or training sessions. The response to Blanca’s art has been extremely warm, and it’s gratifying to hear reports about the enthusiastic appreciation that people express coming into the space that is now filled with original art . Blanca’s work definitely looks fantastic in these new offices!

Chelsea Crowshoe is a resident of Turner Valley, AB and is working hard to raise money for the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA). She has committed to raising $6,100 and wil running a half-marathon in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil in July 2012 with Team Diabetes. This is going to be the third event she has participated in with Team Diabetes. Chelsea participated in the Honolulu Marathon in December 2010 and the Calgary Marathon on May 29, 2011.

“I have chosen to raise money for the Canadian Diabetes Association because of how diabetes impacts my family as well as the Aboriginal population as a whole. I am a First Nations person who has had the privilege of working in Aboriginal Health for my whole career. I have a clear understanding of what diabetes is doing to the population and the devastation diabetes will cause if we don’t continue to support research into the prevention and cure of diabetes.

The prevalence of diabetes within the Aboriginal population is 5 – 7 times higher than the Canadian average. According to Health Canada diabetes was practically unknown in Aboriginal communities prior to 1945. It is now estimated 27% of First Nations people will have Type 2 diabetes within the next 20 years. It is expected that a similar increase will be seen also among Inuit and Métis people.” ~ Chelsea Crowshoe

Eleanor Lowden Pidgeon installation at The English Osteopaths

We are pleased and excited to announce this new collaboration with a Calgary business. For the next six-months (September 2011 – March 2012) you can view an installation of works by Eleanor Lowden Pidgeon in the new offices of The English Osteopaths. All of Eleanor’s paintings (nineteen of them) are available for purchase and you are invited to view them in person by visiting the office at Suite 103, 1519 34th Ave S.W., Calgary, Alberta.

The English Osteopaths wanted to create a pleasant environment for their clients, as well as providing a healthy point of focus for their Osteopaths in the new treatment rooms. Now the Osteopaths can focus on an original painting of the natural world in each treatment room, which helps them greatly when offering their treatments to support clients’ health. The team is enthusiastic about the experience of enlivening the space with original art – which we believe is a testament to the power of original fine art! And, Eleanor’s work glows beautifully in their brand new office space!
