Join us for an evening of simple ceremony, teachings, and heartfelt discussion with Spiritual Elder and Minister, Jaki Daniels, as she shares some of her thoughts and wisdom on gifts, giving, and the role of beauty in our lives.

This is a free, after-hours event in the gallery.  No pre-registration required.

Chelsea (5847) with team after Honolulu Marathon, December 2010

Chelsea Crowshoe is a resident of Turner Valley, AB and is working hard to raise money for the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA).  She has committed to raising $6,100 and wil running a half-marathon in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil in July 2012 with Team Diabetes. This is going to be the third event she has participated in with Team Diabetes. Chelsea participated in the Honolulu Marathon in December 2010 and the Calgary Marathon on May 29, 2011.

“I have chosen to raise money for the Canadian Diabetes Association because of how diabetes impacts my family as well as the Aboriginal population as a whole. I am a First Nations person who has had the privilege of working in Aboriginal Health for my whole career. I have a clear understanding of what diabetes is doing to the population and the devastation diabetes will cause if we don’t continue to support research into the prevention and cure of diabetes.

The prevalence of diabetes within the Aboriginal population is 5 – 7 times higher than the Canadian average. According to Health Canada diabetes was practically unknown in Aboriginal communities prior to 1945. It is now estimated 27% of First Nations people will have Type 2 diabetes within the next 20 years. It is expected that a similar increase will be seen also among Inuit and Métis people.” ~ Chelsea Crowshoe

Susan Kristoferson :: Itajime Paper Dyeing :: Artist’s Demo in the gallery

We had a great time with Susan.  If you weren’t able to make it, here is the VIDEO of the demonstration.  And, if you want to see the resulting paper from the demo, come to Bluerock Gallery!

If you are able to come to the gallery tomorrow (if the snow doesn’t fall too thick and fast!), do plan to see Susan’s Artist’s Demo.  She will be showing us how she dyes paper in the Itajime fashion, an ancient Japanese “fold and clamp” technique that resembles tie-dye.  Usually used to dye fabric, there are only a handful of people in the world who are using this technique on papers.  Fascinating!

Saturday, April 16, from 2 – 4 pm in the gallery.  No need to register.  And it’s FREE!

Susan will also be bringing her specialty papers in large sheet format to add to her artwork that we have available in the gallery.  After this Saturday, you’ll be able to buy her many specialty papers (paste-painting, Shibori, Itajime) in the gallery.  We already have her “Paper Snippets” in stock – collections of small bits of hand-painted papers perfect for the collage or multi-media artist!
